5 Keys to Overcoming Indulgent URGES
Why do we get stuck in habits that we don't want to have?
We want to stop. So why does it seem to have such a grip?
A few key things to understand about over-desire.
1. Our primitive brain is programmed to seek pleasure. Its a base human desire. Every single one of us is pre-programmed with that in us.
2. Today's world offers concentrated pleasure in many forms (pornography, sugary foods, alcohol, drugs, caffeinated drinks, unending social media sites).
3. Concentrated pleasures give our brains a EXTRA LARGE dose of dopamine - the pleasure neurotransmitter.
4. Getting EXTRA LARGE doses of dopamine develops an over-desire in our brains.
5. Understanding this helps us feel those urges without needing to obey them. Its just our brains wanting something.
Our brains can be like a toddler in a candy store.
We can be the ADULT that understands what is best for our toddler brain.
Our brain will come up with excuses and good reasons why we should give in.
We can teach it to quiet down... we don't need to give into the urge to survive.
Allowing an urge can be difficult at first. It is a skill and takes practice.
But allowing an urge without answering it feels so good! We get to be in control!
