Time Management and Goal Setting
All of us have the same amount of time in a day. What we do with that time matters because time is something that we can't get back and we can't make more of. We all have only what we have.
You might think that you are so busy, but when you list the things you have to do it is really only a handful of things. When we feel busy, it's because our minds are noisy. Our minds make noise by rehearsing upcoming tasks over and over, and this mind activity can actually slow us down. We get less done because we are feeling overwhelmed with our thoughts.
So a few tricks to managing time.
FIRST, take inventory of your time. Think back to yesterday. Write down everything you did yesterday from the time you woke up to the time you went to bed. Write down all you can remember that you did.
THEN write down your priorities for your time. Not necessarily the things you value most (such as your family), but what do you want to spend your time doing the most. Write down the top 5 things.
FINALLY reconcile those lists. How many of the things you did yesterday are on your list of the top 5 things you want to spend your time doing?
This will paint a picture of where you can improve managing your own time.
Also, focus on ONE big goal at a time.
1. Write down your big goal.
2. Think of possible obstacles to your goal.
3. Create strategies to overcome those obstacles.
4. Put it on your calendar.
5. Once it is on your calendar, honor your commitment to do it when the time comes.
This is so important! Let your calendar be your boss.
But remember to calendar in your priorities first and that includes time to do fun and relaxing things. If you do this, you will love your calendar!
You will love the time you schedule off and you will be ready to work when you have goals to tackle. Then you won't be tempted to replace goal time with fun time because the fun is scheduled in your calendar too.
Practice this. Be consistent in your practice until you become an expert time manager.
