4 Steps to REALLY Forgive Yourself

All of us make mistakes.

It can be hard to get past the ones that have tripped us up the most.

We may think that we should have known better and we may have a hard time trusting ourselves that we won't make the same mistake again.

So how will you know if you are past it and have forgiven yourself?

And what does it even feel like to know that you HAVE forgiven yourself?

Some helpful steps to forgiving yourself of things you've done in the past are:

  • 1. Understand that although you may have known some things about what you should have done, you were a different person when you made those mistakes. You didn't know as much then as you know now. You had thoughts that justified your actions at the time, and so you made a mistake.

  • 2. After understanding this, have complete compassion for yourself. Be gentle, be loving to your past self. Own the portion of responsibility that is yours and lay down your self-demeaning thoughts about your past. Stop beating yourself up for it. When you beat yourself up for mistakes, you can get to a place where you don't care what happens, and then you let go of trying to improve.

  • 3. Love who you are now including the portion that came because of the difficult experiences of your past. You are wiser and more able to understand the atonement. You can cultivate one of the greatest attributes of the Savior in your life, which is humility. From humility, you are teachable and God can make more of us than we can on our own. Trust in that.

  • 4. When you think of your past, think of it in a way that serves the present. Make it a story of triumph, not of victim or blame. Put yourself in a position of empowerment! This will serve your present and future self in a way that propels you toward a future you desire.

You'll know if you have forgiven yourself, not because you will forget the past, but because it won't be holding you back anymore.

All of us make mistakes...God knew we would and that's why we have a Savior. He is the way to improve. Look to Him in every thought. Doubt not! Fear not!

Soak in these steps. They are life-changing!
