5 Strategies to Prepare for a Mission
Many youth in the church don't feel ready to serve. And they can get stuck in this space for a long time.
It's not because they don't WANT to serve, because many of them DO, they just don't know how to navigate to the place where they feel ready.
So here are some strategies that I've found can help them get UN-stuck from that place.
1. REALIZE that nothing has gone wrong. If you don't feel ready, you aren't. And not being ready is okay. That is you internal signal that you have something else to do before you go. What a blessing that you have that.
2. ENVISION yourself not being able to feel fear about serving a mission. Take a second....take away the fear or whatever you call it (anxiety, worry, etc.). Now, from this place what can you determine a time that feels right for you to be ready to serve a mission? Think of a specific date you'd want to leave for your mission.
3. LET GO of needing to have all the answers. A mission is a time to put your faith in the lead. We are all on different places in our knowledge of the gospel but realize that you know enough!
4. GROW with it. Missions are about service. And serving stretches us but also fills us up! When you realize the amazing experiences that serving can have, you will want that for yourself. Like President Hinckley's father said to him in a letter, "Forget yourself, and go to work." Allow this to be your motto too. This will develop the best version of yourself. Be willing to experience that type of inner change.
5. PLAN toward your vision. You've seen your timeline. What stands in between that time and now? Plan strategies to overcome the obstacles you can see. Look at your life now, and where you want to be at the time you leave for your mission. Make mini-goals to fill in the time between now and that future date and don't let your fear get in the way.
These are just a few things that can help you.
I also have developed an awesome 6-week in-depth course for future missionaries. If you're interested in learning more about it, book a free mini-session from my Facebook page. I have limited space for this program so don't delay. https://www.facebook.com/LornaOlsonCoaching
